Description

Growth Form: Sparingly branched trees 6–7 m tall.

Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate. Blades oblanceolate, blades 16–30 cm long, 1.5–4 cm wide. Apex subacute. Base attenuate. Surfaces glabrous. Margins callose–crenulate. Petioles winged, 0.8–2 cm long. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in inflorescences 4–8–flowered, peduncles 18–48 mm long, pedicels 6–15 mm long, bracts narrowly triangular, 4–7 mm long. Flowers bisexual (perfect); hypanthium obconical, 12–17 mm long. Calyx lobes narrowly triangular, 4–7 mm long, 1–2 mm wide. Corolla greenish white, 30–45 mm long, 5–7 mm wide, the tube gently curved, the lobes 1⁄2–¾ as long as the tube. Stamens 5, alternate with corolla lobes, connate; staminal column pubescent at base; anthers glabrous, the lower 2 with apical tufts of white hairs. Ovary inferior, 2-celled; ovule placentation axile; stigma 2-lobed, wet or dry, appressed and nonreceptive as the style grows through the anther tube, pushing out the pollen, after which the stigmas spread apart and become receptive.

Fruit: Berries unknown. Seeds: mature seeds not seen.

Ploidy:

Habitat: Known only from the type (Rock 8595; A; BISH; CAS; GH; NSW; NY; S; W); collected in 1910 in subalpine shrubland on Pu'unianiau; a small cinder cone on the northwestern slopes of Haleakalā; East Maui.

Elevation Range: ca. 2,130 m.
